Two of my favourite things to do on the Internet are visit my Facebook page and publish posts on my blog. I am originally from Malaysia and have lived here in Adelaide since October 2003. I really love it here but it does mean that my family and childhood friends are far away and I only get to see them once a year. Maybe that will change when I start earning more money and can afford the airfare twice a year! Also, a lot of my childhood friends have also ended up overseas in countries such as England, Canada and the USA. Facebook is great in that it allows people from all over the world to connect (or reconnect as may be the case). We each have a ‘Wall’ which we can write on. We can also upload photos, send messages and write status updates. Our friends can make comments on our status which can make for some hilarious reading ! There are also cool applications like SuperPoke and Send Karma, which I use to tell people I do think about them when I don’t have the time or inclination to send them a message. I never thought I would be so addicted! I’m on Facebook almost every day when I come home from work. As for my blog, it is very new still as I only started it in November last year. You’re welcome to take a look: http://auditdiva.blogspot.com. People might say, why blog? Why don’t you just keep a diary? Well, blogging for me is also a way to communicate with my friends and family. It allows me to say my piece and put it out there, so to speak. I have to develop a thicker skin though as I don’t moderate the comments people might leave. I was quite stung by one left by Anonymous on a post I published about migrating to Adelaide. Anonymous said I would be better off staying in Malaysia otherwise I would get fatter! Well, not knowing who Anonymous is, my imagination ran wild. Was it some nasty ‘friend’ wanting to get back at me? Was it someone I’d pissed off along the way? How could they say that? But I got over it. I did choose not to moderate the comments, after all. So I left a smart-alec reply and continued on blogging.

Liza — thanks so much for sharing all of this! How does your family back home in Malaysia get access to the internet to keep in touch with you? are they reading your blog?

My parents have broadband internet in their house, and also at my father’s clinic. I would say most of their internet access is from the clinic as the home computer is not working at the moment! My brothers are away at uni so would access the internet through their library or computer room. They each have a laptop but I don’t think they have internet access in their rooms. I don’t think they read my blog though I can’t be too sure as my visitor tracking is limited to the reader’s location e.g. Miri, Sarawak or Adelaide, Australia. I can only tell if people become followers or leave comments (and their names!).
