Where would I be without the internet? I moved from Queensland to SA 2 1/2 years ago and got into blogging as a way to keep in touch with my old mates, tell yarns, post pics etc. I had all sorts of fun working out how email groups and blog feeds work - I was between jobs so had heaps of time! My mates are mostly readers not writers but we all get a kick out of emailing complete rubbish about the place. Once I got the hang of it I started posting video on YouTube, mostly of my kids and sending them to my family and a couple of friends overseas. I did the same with sharing photos using Picassa. I stumbled across Google Reader and then Twitter. I experimented a bit with keeping a blog to capture ideas etc but have found social bookmarking via Delicious just as useful to tag stuff I want to refer to in future. Podcasting is a big favourite, esp Radio National shows I miss - I bang them on the ipod and listen while cycling in the hills (v little traffic so nice and safe!). I almost exclusively use internet radio station to listen to music at home (Jango). I wonder what this thing called the internet will look like when my kids grow up - they already ‘get’ the instananeous nature of watching a video online or seeing an image from a digital camera. I also wonder what happens to my photos if Google goes bust!? But apart from that I find the whole thing exciting, rather then daunting.

  1. Hey Fergus — nice to hear from you. Do you think of yourself as being a bit of an early adopter? or a tech-literate person?

  2. G’day Genevieve, welcome back. i think i am reasonably literate about the tools but not the technology, if that makes sense - I wouldnt know a router from an ashtray but I find most of the social media tools very intuitive. I find tech talk a complete haze. Interestingly, the more i use technology the shorter my patience - i get the sh*ts v quickly if the laptop or internet doesnt respond NOW! Deep breathing required… I think am an early adopter compared to my Qld mates, honestly, they are hopeless, which is a little frustrating, and they should know better! Cheers F
